Balfour, Mpumalanga — In a powerful show of corporate citizenship and hometown pride, VEA Road Maintenance & Civils, led by Managing Director Thoko Tshabalala-Shandu, commemorated Mandela Day 2025 by renovating two impoverished family homes and supporting the expansion of a local church in the Siyathemba township of Balfour. The initiative, rooted in Dipaleseng where Thoko herself was raised, reflects VEA’s deep commitment to infrastructure with purpose and community transformation.
On Friday, 18 July, the VEA team conducted full home makeovers for the Ngubane and Nqombolo families. These households, identified in partnership with Freedom in Christ Prophetic Ministries and Social Services, face severe socio-economic challenges. The renovations included the installation of new doors and windows, full interior painting, flooring replacements, and the provision of furniture and household essentials. Food hampers, warm clothing, and educational support items were also donated to each family.
The humanitarian effort culminates on Sunday, 20 July, with the formal handover of construction materials and funding for Phase Two of the Freedom in Christ Prophetic Ministries church development. VEA’s contribution enables the completion of two Sunday school classrooms, a kitchen, an office, and a storeroom—an investment in both the spiritual and educational future of Balfour’s community.
“This isn’t just Mandela Day. It’s a return to the community that made me who I am,” said Thoko Tshabalala-Shandu. “We are building more than homes and churches—we are rebuilding dignity, restoring hope, and paving a way for future generations.”
Thoko’s leadership continues to position VEA Road Maintenance & Civils not only as an infrastructure powerhouse but also as a benchmark for social impact and transformation in South Africa. The company remains a Level 1 BBBEE contributor and a top driver of supplier development, youth employment, and community upliftment nationwide.
